QISP Qualification

Thank you for your interest in becoming an Industrial General Permit Qualified Industrial Stormwater Practitioner (QISP). QISP qualifications are good for two years, after which you must renew your qualification. Your name, QISP certificate number, and expiration date will be posted for public reference on the QISP Lookup Tool. You can choose to make your contact information available as well. You are responsible for keeping your contact information current. If you change jobs, move to a new address, or change your email address, be sure to update your listing.

CASQA is partnering with the Office of Water Programs at Sacramento State (OWP) to administer the IGP QISP Training Program.

New Qualifications:

  1. Log in at www.owp.csus.edu
  2. Click 'Stormwater Certificates'
  3. Click 'IGP QISP'

After confirming that you have read the Industrial General Permit, read the SMARTS guides, and completed the self-assessment questionnaire, the following steps must be completed in order:

1. Register to take the QISP exam

Register at the Water Programs at Sacramento State (OWP) website and pay the $505 fee (effective 1.1.2023). This also provides you with access to your online account. From the time of registration and fee payment there is a 2-year time limit to complete all training and exams.

2. Complete the online training

Training consists of videos, quizzes, and reading assignments. You may take the self-assessment quizzes as often as you like. Quiz grades do not affect your completion of the training. However, you do need to understand the material presented in the online training to pass the exams. The training can take 16 hours or more to complete, depending on your level of expertise in the field.

3. Pass the midterm online exam

You have two attempts to pass the 35-question midterm online exam with a grade of 70% or higher. The online exam must be completed in a single two-hour session.

4. Complete the one-day, in-person training with an IGP ToR

After passing the midterm online exam, register for the in-person ToR training via the class calendar at www.owp.csus.edu. A public version of the calendar is available at https://www.owp.csus.edu/stormwater-training/igp/calendar/.

The training course may now be taken virtually (live online rather than in-person) from specially qualified Trainers of Record. To find a specially qualified IGP Trainer of Record, look for a “Yes” answer in the “Virtual Option?” column in the current IGP ToRs list posted below under 'Qualified California Industrial General Permit Trainers of Record'.

5. Pass the final online exam

You have two attempts to pass the 70-question final online exam with a grade of 70% or higher. The online exam must be completed in a single four-hour session.

Additional Qualification Option for CBPELSG Licensed Training Program Only

California licensed professional civil, industrial, chemical, and mechanical engineers and geologists have licenses that have professional overlap with topics in the Industrial General Permit. The State Water Board developed a specialized self-guided State Water Board-sponsored registration and training program specifically for these CBPELSG licensed engineers and geologists in good standing with CBPELSG. To complete the training and self-certification, create an account on the Water Programs at Sacramento State website with these steps:

  1. Log in at www.owp.csus.edu
  2. Click 'Stormwater Certificates'
